Overview

Armadale Health Service is part of the East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS) – an extensive hospital and health service network that aims to maintain and improve the health and well-being of more than 708,000 West Australians in its catchment area.

East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS) have identified a requirement to upgrade existing electrical infrastructure at the Armadale Health Service (AHS) to maintain operational continuity and network reliability.

Scope

Intellect Systems was engaged by EMHS to undertake the feasibility planning and design of the electrical systems. The scope of professional services included:

• Development of a Basis of Design / Options Report providing guidance to EMHS stakeholders.
• Preparation of engineering drawings and Scope of Works documentation suitable for open market tender.
• Selection of Air Circuit Breakers suitable for replacement and integration with the existing building management system.
• Design of diesel generator interfacing and automatic transfer system to provide network redundancy.
• Design of kiosk distribution substation and associated electrical network connection.

Smarter Solutions

Intellect Systems understands the importance of maintaining operational continuity at critical facilities. The ageing electrical infrastructure at Armadale Health Service Campus presented the client with an operational risk and maintenance challenge.

When working with the client to modernise the site’s electrical infrastructure design, Intellect Systems used an open and transparent approach to inform stakeholders of the operational impact of the upgrades and how strategic deployment could minimise disruption.

An existing indoor transformer and building main switchboard had reached the end of their service life. Replacing the superseded equipment with modern options would enhance functionality and ease of maintenance for the client.

A large brick substation building originally housed the indoor transformer and building main switchboard. A review of equipment layout options determined that a kiosk distribution substation would provide the best transition experience for the client, by ensuring the design could be sequenced to minimise disruption to the health campus’s operations. The containerised kiosk was also a compact and neat housing solution for the equipment, increasing visual amenity at the site.

To ensure the health campus had a backup power source, Intellect designed the point of attachment and transfer switching systems associated with introducing a diesel generator. The various integration options were reviewed to determine the optimal attachment point and generator positioning.

Intellect Systems provided the client with comprehensive design services up to the tendering phase, ensuring they were well-prepared for the next steps.

The Armadale Health Service Campus Electrical Upgrades project illustrates Intellect Systems’ capacity to provide tailored electrical design solutions for complex and critical infrastructure environments.
