Overview

Mineral Resources Limited (MRL) Onslow Iron Project involves developing a series of previously inaccessible iron ore deposits to produce and export 30Mtpa of fine iron ore products. The project facilities comprising of the port marine, port infrastructure, haul road, truck maintenance facilities and Ken’s Bore processing facility are designed for 40Mtpa capacity to meet future demand.

Ken’s Bore & Yarri Lease camp will support the Onslow Iron Project’s drilling and early construction works. Ken’s Bore resort-style camp provides accommodation for up to 350 staff, while Yarri Lease accommodates up to 200 team members.

Scope

Intellect Systems was engaged by MRL to design the electrical, communications and security systems associated with the Ken’s Bore and Yarri Lease camps. Intellect’s scope included the design of the following:

  • Site Distribution Boards
  • LV Distribution Network
  • Site Earthing Network
  • Light & Small Power Distribution Boards
  • External and internal Artificial Lighting
  • Communications Room layout
  • Site backbone communications
  • CCTV Security Coverage
  • Site Wireless Access Point Coverage
  • Site TV and Data Distribution
  • Power systems modelling and reporting
  • Arc flash calculations and protection

Smarter Solutions

The client entrusted Intellect Systems with designing the electrical and communications systems for the accommodation infrastructure at both Kens Bore and Yarri Lease camps. The solution focused on fast deployment, long-term reliability and reduced maintenance costs, reflecting Intellect Systems’ commitment to exceeding client expectations.

The project presented an element of time pressure, with design and implementation on-site occurring simultaneously. The cable schedules, cable calculations and external layout drawings were strategically prioritised, enabling the client to initiate equipment procurement and trenching well before the design’s completion.

Given the simultaneous design execution occurring on-site, maintaining open and regular dialogue with the client was crucial. Methods such as weekly client briefings ensured the client remained updated on progress and any arising issues were quickly resolved. This approach enabled design and progress transparency to ensure client confidence is maintained.

In an industry environment experiencing supply chain challenges, Intellect Systems worked closely with the client’s preferred suppliers to source and specify equipment aligning with the critical timeframe.
